I feel that I learned SOOOOO much today!!! The IMPROV IN THE CLASSROOM session was great and I wanted to share some of the excercises we learned with the rest of the group:

IMPROV FOR THE CLASSROOM

To do in a circle

Check in with Story Ball

You will need a plastic ball (the kind found at most drug stores for about $1) and a sharpie. Write different questions on the ball.
Facilitator starts by throwing the ball to someone else. The person who catches the ball introduces herself and answers the question their writing thumb is on.
The ball continues to go around the circle until everyone has introduced themselves.

Bumpity Bump Bump (Left/Right/You/Me)

A fun name game. One person is in the middle of the circle. The person turns to someone in the circle and says, “Left/Right/You/Me, Bumpity Bump Bump.” The person who is chosen needs to utter the name of the person to their left/right/you or me before the person in the middle finishes saying Bumpity Bump Bump.

Group Juggle

You will need a few small, soft objects (stuffed animals/foam balls/ etc.). One person begins by holding the object and stating his name. He then tosses the object to someone else in the circle who then states her name before tossing to someone else. Once everyone in the circle has had the object once, you try to repeat the pattern in the same order. Then you try two objects going at once and then three and so on and so on.

Truth Move

You will need to use something as place markers (i.e. Chairs, spots, rocks, ECT.). There should be enough places for everyone in the circle. One person in the middle (this person does not have a space in the circle) of the circle states something that is true for them. If this is also true for you, you move from your spot to someone else’s. The person in the middle also tries to get a spot and so a new person is left in the middle.

Pass the Clap

One person in the circle begins by turning and facing another person (can go clockwise or counter clockwise) and the two clap simultaneously. That person then turns to the next person and they clap simultaneously and so on until the clap goes around the whole circle. Clapping twice reverses the clap so it goes in the opposite direction.
-Can also be done using the word “Vroom” instead of clapping.

Zip Zap Zoom

One person in the circle begins by sliding their hands together as if to point at someone else in the circle and says the word “Zip!” That person then slides her hands together as if pointing at someone else and says “Zap!” That person repeats the gesture and says “Zoom!” Zip zap zoom is repeated in that order throughout the circle.
-You can make it competitive by making people “out” when they say the wrong word but having them stay in the circle. Others must remember that those people are out and that they cannot participate. Last one “in” wins.

Name 6

You will need a soft object to pass around the circle. The object begins going around the circle. One person stands in the middle of the circle with their eyes closed. And randomly calls out stop and says a letter of the alphabet. The person holding the object when stop is called must name 6 things that begin with that letter before the object makes it back to her.

Permission to Move/ Yes

Everyone stands in the circle. One person points at someone in another place in the circle and must wait until the person says yes before moving. Once the person says yes, you begin moving, but that person must point at someone else and get a yes before they move and so on and so on.

What are you doing? (With letters)

One person in the circle begins by miming some sort of gesture (running, swimming, singing, dancing, etc.). The person to the right asks. “What are you doing?” The person replies by saying something that is completely NOT what they are doing. The person to the right then mimes what the person said and the next person asks “What are you doing?”
-This can be done by selecting letters, and all miming must begin with dad letter

Tell the Truth/When I Was

Three people step out of the room and decide what “truth” they are going to tell. It should only be true for one person, but all three will try to make the rest of the group believe they are telling the truth. Once they decide they come back in the class. The facilitator asks them to share their truth, and then the rest of the group questions them, so as to find out who is really telling the truth…the group then guesses and the truth is revealed.

CHAIRS

Kitty Wants a Corner
One player in the middle. Goes up to someone and says, “Kitty wants a corner.” The person replies “Go see my neighbor”. Meanwhile 2 players try to make eye contact, and then switch places, while the middle player tries to capture a corner.

MOVING

Give and Take Walk (Physical Conversation)

One person in the group is walking. Anyone can “pick up” the walk at any time. When someone picks up the walk the other person stops walking.

Group Stop

Everyone in the group is walking around. If one person stops everyone must stop. Anyone can resume the walk.

PRESENTATIONAL EXCERSICES

New York Lemonade

Divide the group by counting off in apples and oranges. Oranges are on one side and apples are on another side. Apples decide on a profession they want to silently act out (teachers, doctors, lawyers). When they are ready, they start walking (as a group) to the Oranges side and say (as they walk) “Here we come.” The oranges reply. “Where from?” the apples say, “New York.” The oranges, “What is your trade?” Apples, “Lemonade.” Oranges: “Give us some.” At this point the apples begin to mime the trade they chose, the oranges try to guess…..once they get it apples must run back to their “base” and oranges must try to catch them. Any one who is tagged is now on the other side. Then Oranges get a turn and so on.

THESE ARE SO MUCH FUN!!!! HOPE EVERYONE CAN USE THEM!
